WHAT TO SEE AT SXSW

By Jacob Vernick

Headed down to Austin for SXSW but didn’t have the cash to spend on the $800 badge? Don’t worry! We have done our research and found the best free shows for you to go to while you’re in Austin.

The Austin Jump Off is our first choice here. This showcase, which will take place at Maggie Mae’s Rooftop on Wednesday, March 12 at 11:30 a.m. features some up and coming alternative rock bands like The Mowgli’s and A Great Big World. There will also be free drinks served by Maggie Mae’s and no RSVP is necessary. It’s an early show and won’t interfere with any night plans, so start your day early with this stellar lineup.

Saturday March 15th at noon will be the Altercation Punk Rock BBQ featuring Riverboat Gamblers and Lost In Society. The show is at The Vortex in Austin and will have free beer and a free barbecue. There will be tons of other awesome bands, so this is definitely a can’t miss show. Get there early though, as the free beer and BBQ only lasts so long. RSVP at the bottom of this page http://altercationrecordsinc.com/

The Hype Hotel will be featuring two sets per day, one early and one late. The early show is free to the public and is first come first serve with priority to wristband/badge holders and the late show is only for badge holders. There will be music in the day from March 12-15 from noon until 5 p.m. The highlights of Hype Hotel are Against Me! playing on March 12th at 5 p.m. and The 1975 playing March 14th at 5 p.m. They’ll be free food and drinks courtesy of Taco Bell, Miller, and Tito’s Homemade Vodka. The Windish Agency and House of Vans are throwing a joint party together on Friday, March 14th at Mohawk. This showcase will feature Phantogram and, one of the masters of soul, Lee Fields and the Expressions. Admission is once again free to the public with wristband and badge holders getting priority. Tito’s Homemade Vodka will be at this party too. RSVP right here http://www.windishagency.com/sxsw

Our last pick is The Green Room, one of the biggest indie festivals around. The event is sponsored by Beautiful Buzzz, a music blog and live show promoter, and The Most Definitely, a music blog, promoter, and record label. The festival is at The Brew Exchange from March 12-15 but band times have not been announced yet. If you’re into indie music, then this is your showcase, featuring bands such as Goldroom, The Knocks, and Miami Horror.
